The new BMW 5 Series

Earlier this month BMW released a video and a picture of what the New BMW 5 series would look like. Today BMW have officially released pictures, specifications and prices of the new sixth generation BMW 5 series.

The new BMW 5 series will be launched in the first quarter of 2010 – after the Geneva Motor Show.

The new 5 series will be the biggest type of its mark in the whole six generations since 1972. With a total wheelbase figure at 2970mm – at just under 3 metres long this gives more room in the rear, with an elongated bonnet and lowered roofline, this ensures that the car looks and feels a lot bigger on the inside.

The option of 7 different engines at launch will ensure that it is competitive at launch with the Mercedes E Class – its main competitor.

Looking to be the biggest seller in the UK will be the 520d – powered by a 2.0cc diesel engine, delivering 181bhp and 280lb/ft of torque – this will propel the ‘5’ to 62mph in 8.1 seconds and on to its 141mph top speed where law permits – but with this, it returns a mpg figure of 56.5mpg and only produces 132g/km of CO2.

Other diesel engines include, the straight six 525d and the 530d. The 525 producing 201bhp and the latter producing 242bhp, both of these cars will reach 62mph in less than 6.5 seconds and deliver astonishing mpg figures of over 40mpg.

There will be four different petrol engines, two of them being naturally aspirated, the 201 horsepower 523i and the 528i which produces 254bhp. The 535i will be powered by a single turbo charged engine producing 302bhp and the top of the range 550i producing 401bhp powered by a twin turbo V8 engine.

The four petrol engines comprise two naturally aspirated straight sixes (201bhp 523i and 254bhp 528i), a single-turbocharged straight six (302bhp 535i) and the 401bhp, twin-turbo V8 550i.

All the new 5 series will be available as a 6-speed manual, an optional 8-speed automatic gearbox will be made optional for the whole range, and this gearbox is designed to lower emissions for the new car. Stop/Start technology is standard throughout the range.

All new ‘5’ series will gain ‘Servotronic’ speed dependant assistance – which is BMW’s in house design of using hydraulic pumps for their power steering rather than using electric pumps.

Higher specification 5 series cars will include latest traction control systems and electronic stability programmes. Including in this will be the Driver Dynamic Control (DDC) which will allow the driver to select different settings of the car, either for ‘normal’, ‘sport’ and ‘sport+’.

New BMW 5 Series Interior

BMW have revealed the prices of the new 5 series 4 months in advance to compete against the new Mercedes E-Class. They have ensured that standard equipment and prices will be lower than the equivalent E-class.

The BMW 520d SE will have a price tag of £28,165, the 523i SE is £30,560 and the 550i SE costs £49,440.

Is this new BMW 5 Series going to be more popular the Mercedes E-Class?
